High Arctic Landscape Paintings | Dominik Modlinski Art

Journey Into the High Arctic

My first journeys into Canada’s Northwest Territories sparked a powerful desire to explore the High Arctic — one of the most remote and awe-inspiring wilderness regions on Earth. In 2006, I had the rare opportunity to travel aboard the Russian icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov, venturing deep into Greenland, Baffin Island, and Ellesmere Island. This month-long expedition was a defining moment in my career as a Canadian wilderness and landscape artist.

Surrounded by monumental glaciers, ancient fjords, and drifting sea ice, I found painting locations offering a dramatic visual language found nowhere else. The vibrant blues of icebergs, the sharp geometry of Arctic mountains, and the endless horizon of frozen oceans became the foundation for my Arctic landscape paintings.

Painting in the High Arctic demanded adaptability, focus, and constant awareness of changing weather and light. The shifting northern sun transforms rapidly — from soft, ethereal glows to bold contrasts — creating fleeting moments that must be captured on canvas before they disappear.

The Arctic is a place of profound solitude, where wildlife such as polar bears and seabirds thrive in silence. Experiences like these deepened my mission to portray and protect wilderness through art. My Greenland paintings, Baffin Island artwork, and Ellesmere Island paintings reflect adventure, reverence, and a visual celebration of landscapes at risk.

Through this collection, I invite you to journey with me into the untouched beauty of the High Arctic — to feel the wonder, mystery, and inspiration that continue to shape my artistic path.
