O’Hara and the High Country: A Painter’s Journey

O’Hara and the High Country: A Painter’s Journey is a major solo exhibition of original landscape paintings by Canadian artist Dominik Modlinski, presented at Canada House Gallery in Banff.

Created over more than a year of studio work and wilderness painting journeys, the exhibition brings together approximately 60 original paintings, ranging from intimate plein air studies painted directly in the landscape to large-scale studio works.

At the heart of the exhibition is Lake O’Hara and the Canadian Rockies—a landscape I have returned to repeatedly as both a painter and wilderness traveller. High alpine lakes, mountain passes, changing weather, autumn larches and the dramatic light of the Rockies provide the foundation for much of this collection.

Yet the exhibition also reaches beyond the Rockies, bringing together paintings inspired by journeys through the Yukon, Alaska, British Columbia’s West Coast and other remote regions of Canada.

More Than a Landscape

For me, landscape painting has never been simply about recording a beautiful place.

I am interested in the experience of being there—the changing light, weather, colour and atmosphere, but also the emotional response that develops through spending time in wild places.

Many of the larger paintings in this exhibition began with smaller plein air studies, drawings, photographs and memories gathered during painting journeys. Back in the studio, these experiences become the starting point for larger and more interpretive works.

Rather than reproducing the landscape literally, I use colour, expressive brushwork, simplified forms and abstract design to search for something deeper: the character and emotional presence of a place.

25 Years with Canada House Gallery

This exhibition also marks a significant personal milestone: 25 years of representation by Canada House Gallery.

My relationship with the gallery began in 2001 following an extended painting journey through northern British Columbia and the Yukon. I arrived in Banff with a car filled with paintings and the hope of finding a gallery interested in the work.

That journey began a relationship that has continued for a quarter of a century.

Over those years, Canada House Gallery has introduced my paintings to collectors from across Canada and around the world. It seems particularly fitting to celebrate this anniversary with an exhibition devoted to the landscapes that have shaped so much of my life and work.

A Painter’s Journey

The exhibition has been designed not only as a collection of paintings, but as a glimpse into the journey behind them.

Alongside the finished works are stories and photographs from the wilderness expeditions and painting locations that inspired the collection, connecting the studio paintings with the places and experiences from which they emerged.

Together, the works trace an ongoing exploration of the Canadian landscape—from quiet moments beside alpine lakes to monumental mountain walls, northern rivers, coastal forests and the extraordinary light of the high country.

After more than three decades as a professional landscape painter, I still find myself returning to wild places with the same curiosity that first drew me outdoors with a paintbox.

There is always another mountain, another river, another changing sky—and another painting waiting to be discovered.
