Contemporary Canadian Landscape Painting — Dominik Modlinski

Dominik Modlinski is a Canadian landscape artist known for his bold use of color, expressive brushwork, and commitment to painting in the heart of the wilderness. Each artwork begins in the field — on mountain ridges, beside glacial lakes, or along remote Arctic shores — where he captures the energy and truth of nature through plein air painting. These studies become the foundation for his large studio compositions, transforming adventure into powerful visual storytelling.

My Approach

Painting for me is a journey — a physical and creative exploration into places where nature still reigns. I seek landscapes that challenge me: rugged mountains, ancient forests, and environments shaped by geological extremes. Working on location allows me to respond directly to shifting light, scale, and atmosphere. The urgency of plein air painting gives life to every mark on the canvas.

Back in my studio, I translate these field experiences into larger works. I use my plein air paintings, sketches, and photography as references, but the memory of the place — the wind, the silence, the effort — shapes the final composition. My goal is not to document nature, but to convey its strength, harmony, and emotional impact.

The Mission Behind My Art

As wild landscapes continue to disappear, painting becomes a form of preservation. I want my work to inspire others to value and protect the places that shape us — the mountains, glaciers, coasts, and northern tundra.

Every painting is a reminder of what we still have — and what we must not lose.
