'ANCESTRAL WATERS'

Ancestral Waters was inspired by the powerful landscape along the Kootenay River in Kootenay National Park, a place where the passage of time and the forces of nature are clearly written into the land. The slopes still bear the quiet evidence of past forest fires, yet everywhere there are signs of renewal—young growth emerging, light returning to the valley, and the river moving steadily through it all. When I stood there, I was struck by the quiet balance between destruction and regeneration, and by the sense that the landscape was slowly restoring itself in its own time.
This painting grew out of that experience. For me, it speaks to resilience, transformation, and the enduring strength found in wild places. The river becomes a kind of thread through time, carrying memory, change, and renewal as it continues its timeless flow. Ancestral Waters will be part of my upcoming solo exhibition at Canada House Gallery in Banff in September 2026.
