NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR- Painting Adventure.

Workshop #1

Saturday, June 12 - Thursday, June 17, 2027

$3140.00 + HST

Workshop #2

Saturday, June 19 - Friday, June 25, 2027

Newfoundland and Labrador plein air painting workshop featuring the dramatic coastal and mountain landscapes of Gros Morne National Park.

This is not a traditional plein air workshop. It is an field-based painting journey designed for artists who want to think, explore, and create independently while benefiting from the guidance of two experienced mentors.

Rather than following step-by-step demonstrations or painting identical subjects, you'll spend ten days developing your own work in extraordinary locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Every day brings new opportunities to paint dramatic coastal scenery, discover hidden landscapes, and build a meaningful body of plein air work inspired by your own vision.

Throughout the two expedition, Dominik Modlinski will be painting his own work alongside the group, exactly as he does during his professional wilderness painting expeditions throughout Canada and around the world. This offers a unique opportunity to observe an established landscape painter working in real conditions—responding to changing weather, shifting light, colour relationships, and compositional challenges as they unfold.

Rather than leading constant demonstrations, Dominik's role is that of a mentor.

Throughout each painting day, he will move between participants, offering individual guidance tailored to your own artistic goals. Conversations may focus on design, colour harmony, simplification, brushwork, atmosphere, or developing a stronger personal voice. His objective is not to have you paint like him, but to help you become a stronger, more confident painter in your own style.

This workshop is intended for artists who already have some plein air experience and a solid understanding of composition and colour theory. Because of the mentoring format, participants are expected to work independently while remaining open to discussion, experimentation, and creative growth.

Drawing on more than three decades of painting wilderness landscapes across Canada and around the world, Dominik shares practical knowledge gained through thousands of hours working outdoors. His goal is not simply to help you complete better paintings during the workshop, but to give you ideas and approaches that will continue to influence your work long after you return home.

Plein air landscape painting workshop in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland, surrounded by dramatic mountains and wilderness scenery.

Guiding the group is acclaimed photographer Pete Ryan, whose deep knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador comes from more than twenty years of exploration, including expeditions into remote regions such as the Torngat Mountains. Pete's photography has been featured by National Geographic and is archived in the National Geographic Image Collection. His intimate knowledge of the province allows us to venture beyond the usual destinations while providing invaluable advice on photography, visual storytelling, and gathering reference material for future studio paintings.

Each day we'll travel to one or two carefully selected locations, giving participants ample time to paint, explore, and photograph the landscape. Evenings conclude with informal group critiques and discussions, where everyone can share their work, exchange ideas, and apply the day's lessons to the next adventure.

By the end of the workshop, you'll return home with much more than a collection of plein air paintings. You'll leave with stronger observational skills, renewed creative confidence, exceptional photographic reference material, and a deeper understanding of how to approach landscape painting independently.

Who This Expedition Is For

This mentorship expedition is designed for artists who:

  • Have previous plein air painting experience.

  • Are comfortable working independently in the field.

  • Want to develop their own artistic voice rather than copy an instructor.

  • Value one-on-one mentoring and constructive critiques.

  • Enjoy adventure, exploration, and discovering extraordinary landscapes.

  • Want to build a meaningful body of work while experiencing Newfoundland and Labrador in a unique way.

To ensure the highest quality experience for everyone, participation is limited to 12 artists, allowing for meaningful individual mentoring throughout the expedition.

If you're looking for an unforgettable artistic adventure where you'll paint extraordinary places, observe a professional landscape painter at work, receive personal mentoring, and return home inspired to take your work to the next level, we invite you to join us on the East Coast.
