Mexico Paintings: Culture, Landscape & Architecture

Mexico has long been a powerful source of inspiration for my painting journeys. Over the years, I have traveled and painted throughout the country on numerous occasions, drawn to its magical and diverse beauty where reality often overlaps with dream. From sunlit colonial streets and historic architecture to expansive coastal vistas and desert landscapes, these works are shaped by direct, on-location experiences. Working in both plein air and the studio, I translate Mexico’s colour, culture, and light into expressive contemporary landscape and architectural paintings that continue to fuel my creative spirit and sense of adventure.

  • Plein Air Studies of Mexico.

Plein air painting in Mexico is an adventure in every sense of the word. The experience is completely different from working in Canada. The light is stronger, the colours are warmer, and the atmosphere carries a unique energy that constantly challenges and inspires my approach to painting.

Each day in the field brings new and often unpredictable situations. Whether I am setting up along a quiet coastal road, in a village square, or beside a line of palms, the surroundings are always alive with movement and sound. These moments often lead to memorable encounters and stories that become part of the painting itself.

The daily interactions with local people are especially meaningful. There is a genuine friendliness and curiosity about why someone would choose to paint their village, their street, or their landscape. These conversations are warm, spontaneous, and deeply human, and they add a special dimension to the creative process.

Life in Mexico has a slightly surreal quality—a vivid blend of light, colour, rhythm, and the unexpected. There is always a subtle sense of the unknown, and that is exactly what makes painting on location there so mesmerizing. Each canvas becomes not only a study of a place, but a reflection of the atmosphere, encounters, and experiences gathered in the moment.
