Ontario and Quebec Landscape Paintings — Forest and Lake Scenery

My earliest artistic inspirations were shaped by the landscapes of Ontario. In my formative years, I spent several seasons painting in the Algoma region and along the shores of Georgian Bay and Quebec, exploring the wilderness by canoe, on foot, and through long days of camping in the backcountry. These experiences formed the foundation of my approach to landscape painting and my connection to the Canadian outdoors.

Each autumn, the land transforms into a luminous tapestry of colour, flowing across granite ridges, forests, and quiet lakes. The energy and movement of this vibrant season left a lasting impression on me, shaping my first years as a painter and continuing to influence my work today. Many of these paintings are a tribute to the deep emotional connection I feel to these Eastern Canadian landscapes.

Plein Air Studies of Ontario and Quebec.

Painting plein air across the diverse regions of Eastern Canada laid the foundation for my later journeys into the great mountain landscapes of Western Canada and beyond. These early years were filled with exploration—canoe trips through quiet waterways, long hikes along rugged trails, and extended backpacking adventures into the wilderness. Each journey offered new perspectives and a deeper understanding of the land.

The varied terrain of the region, especially during the autumn season, revealed extraordinary colour harmonies across forests, lakes, and granite ridges. These rich, vibrant palettes became the cornerstone of my artistic development, shaping both my plein air practice and the larger studio works that would follow. The lessons learned in these eastern landscapes continue to influence my painting approach to this day.
