Canadian Rockies Paintings — BC & Alberta Landscapes
The eastern British Columbia and western Alberta region—including the iconic landscapes of Banff , Jasper National Parks, Yoho National Park and Kootenay National Park—has inspired countless plein air sketches and studio paintings throughout my career. I return annually to paint, snowboard, hike, and explore these national parks and surrounding wild regions, capturing glaciers, alpine lakes, and rugged mountain peaks.
These adventures fuel both plein air creations in the field and large studio works, translating the light, textures, and moods of the Canadian Rockies onto canvas. Each painting celebrates the majesty and timeless beauty of these legendary landscapes.
Plein Air Studies of the Rocky Mountains
Painting the Canadian Rockies since 2001 has been one of my central artistic inspirations. Having lived in Alberta, I explored the Bow Valley and surrounding Rocky Mountain National Parks through extensive plein air painting directly in the field.
The Rocky Mountains of Canada are defined by constantly changing conditions—dramatic weather, shifting light, and rapidly evolving alpine atmospheres. These challenges create rewarding opportunities to capture the unique character of the high alpine landscape. Hiking and backpacking through the mountains allows for an immersive experience, creating lasting visual and emotional references that later inform my larger studio paintings.
These plein air landscape studies serve as the foundation for my work, capturing scale, light, and atmosphere unique to the Canadian Rockies.
Studio Interpretations of the Canadian Rockies
A central focus of these works is the ever-changing colour of the mountain rock formations, influenced by light, elevation, weather, and season. Through layered paint and considered composition, I aim to convey the immensity of the mountains, their distinctive alpine vegetation, and the rhythm of seasonal change. The Canadian Rockies are an integral part of Canada’s natural and cultural identity, and these paintings seek to honour that legacy through a contemporary landscape painting approach grounded in direct observation.
