Pacific Northwest and West Coast Landscape Paintings — Ocean , Mountains and Forest

Western Canada — especially the Pacific West Coast — is my home and a constant source of artistic inspiration. The dynamic combination of ocean, forest, and towering mountains creates ever-changing landscapes that fuel my creativity. From rugged shorelines and crashing waves to tranquil inlets and island peaks, the wilderness of coastal British Columbia offers endless adventures and painting opportunities. Each artwork reflects the untamed energy and spirit of this coastline.

Plein Air Studies of the West Coast.

These plein air landscape paintings are created on location throughout Vancouver Island and coastal British Columbia, inspired by extended hiking and kayaking journeys along the Pacific coastline. Working directly outdoors allows for an immediate response to the changing light, weather, and atmosphere unique to the West Coast of Canada.

The Pacific West Coast landscape offers an endless variety of compositions—from crashing ocean waves and rugged shorelines to overlapping coastal islands and ancient temperate rainforests. These small-scale field studies capture movement, mood, and the raw energy of the coastal environment and serve as the foundation for larger studio paintings.

  • Studio Interpretations

The large-scale West Coast studio paintings are developed from original plein air studies, supported by field photography gathered on location. In the studio, these references are transformed into expansive compositions that explore the depth, scale, and emotional presence of the Pacific Northwest landscape.

These paintings investigate the meeting of ocean, coastal mountains, and forested valleys—where mist, light, and atmosphere define the character of the British Columbia coastline. Working at a larger scale allows for a more immersive interpretation while remaining grounded in direct observation and plein air tradition.
