Original painting was inspired by one of my painting journeys into the Mackenzie Mountains near MacMillan Pass in Yukon Territory. I have returned to this remote area many times over the years, especially during autumn. The changing colours, unpredictable weather, and endless open space always leave me inspired and full of new ideas.
There is something special about the North in the fall—the tundra glowing with reds, golds, and ochres, the crisp air, distant mountains, and the quiet feeling of being completely surrounded by wilderness. It is a landscape I never get tired of exploring and painting.
I particularly enjoy working with vertical compositions because they allow me to capture the whole journey through the landscape. The eye can travel from the intricate textures and colour patterns of the foreground, through the open tundra and valleys, and finally toward the distant mountains and expansive northern sky.
For me, this format creates a natural sense of movement, depth, and discovery, reflecting the experience of actually standing there and looking deep into the vast northern landscape.
