Original painting was inspired by a week-long painting trip to Vargas Island in Clayoquot Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is a remarkable coastal landscape of exposed rocky shores, long sandy beaches, sheltered bays, tidal lagoons, and mudflats, all surrounded by the wild beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Early summer was a wonderful time to be there. We were fortunate to have blue skies, calm weather, and a slow Pacific surf rolling onto the sandy beaches. The combination of warm light, open ocean, rugged shoreline, and distant coastal landscape created a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.
