Original painting captures the Chilkat River as seen from Flower Mountain near Haines, Alaska, looking toward the vast wilderness of Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park in British Columbia. From this elevated viewpoint, the river winds through the broad valley on its journey toward the Pacific Ocean.
What I love about this part of the North is the dramatic transition in the landscape. The rugged northern mountains and boreal forest gradually give way to the lush coastal vegetation of Southeast Alaska and, eventually, the ocean below.
From high above the valley, you can really appreciate the immense scale and wildness of this landscape—mountains, forests, winding river channels, and the distant coast all coming together. With this painting, I wanted to capture that remarkable meeting place between the northern interior and the Pacific.
