Original painting was inspired by an autumn journey through the Yukon along the Top of the World Highway, west of Dawson City. The view captures the wide, sweeping hills of this remarkable northern landscape, where areas once scarred by wildfire are slowly coming back to life.
From a distance, the recovering landscape creates a beautiful tapestry of colour and pattern. New undergrowth spreads between the remains of the burned forest, turning brilliant shades of red, orange, gold, during the short northern autumn.
This has become one of my favourite subjects to paint because it represents the cycle of destruction, renewal, and rebirth in nature. What at first appears damaged and lifeless gradually transforms as vegetation returns and the landscape begins another chapter.
