Original painting was inspired by numerous painting trips along the Chilkat River just outside Haines, Alaska. Cottonwood trees line the riverbanks and the many small islands of the river delta as the Chilkat makes its way toward the ocean.
I have always been fascinated by the transition from the surrounding alpine landscape into the broad river flats. The constantly shifting channels, gravel bars, islands, and vegetation create an incredibly rich and changing environment that has been a continuous source of inspiration for me.
This painting captures the last days of autumn, when only a few golden leaves remain clinging to the cottonwood branches. I wanted to focus on the small ecosystem of one of the many islands and waterways, using the intricate patterns of vegetation, water, and exposed riverbed to create a strong sense of texture and movement.
More than anything, I wanted to show how the Chilkat River shapes and nourishes the landscape around it, constantly creating new patterns and changing the environment as it flows toward the Pacific.
