Original painting was inspired by the autumn hills west of Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, a landscape I have returned to many times over the years for painting and inspiration.
Autumn in the Yukon is incredibly brief, but during those few short weeks the transformation is spectacular. The tundra seems to explode with colour as deep reds, crimson, golds, oranges, sweep across the rolling hills, creating an extraordinary tapestry of colour and pattern.
I have always been fascinated by the intensity of this short northern season. There is a wonderful sense of energy in the landscape, but also an awareness that everything is about to change. Within weeks, much of this colour will disappear beneath the first snows of winter.
