Original painting was inspired by a plein air painting and photography journey through the Kootenay region of British Columbia. Throughout my travels there, I encountered valleys and mountainsides still bearing the scars of recent wildfires.

Although fire can dramatically transform a landscape, I am always fascinated by how quickly nature begins the process of renewal. New grasses, shrubs, and young trees slowly emerge among the burned forest, bringing colour and life back to the land.

In this painting, the river becomes an important symbol of that renewal, carrying water and nourishment through the scarred landscape and supporting the new growth along its banks.

I wanted this painting to explore the contrast between destruction and regeneration—the resilience of the natural world and the sense of hope that comes from watching life gradually return.
