original painting was inspired by the high alpine landscape of the Bugaboos in British Columbia, capturing that fleeting moment when the first snowfall of the season meets the last colours of autumn.
Golden alpine larches still glow against the newly fallen snow, while the late afternoon sun selectively illuminates a few branches and distant peaks, leaving much of the landscape in deep, cool shadow. I have always been fascinated by these brief transitions between seasons, when autumn and winter seem to exist together for only a few days.
In the studio, I explored this contrast through a split-complementary palette, using warm yellows and red-violets against the cooler tones of the snow and shadows. This interplay of warm and cool colour helped me create both depth and atmosphere while emphasizing the final warmth of autumn.
