Original painting was inspired by a month-long hiking and painting journey through the Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia during the autumn. Traveling through the mountains on foot allowed me to experience the landscape slowly and intimately, observing the subtle changes in colour, light, and atmosphere from day to day.
Autumn brings a remarkable richness to the Kootenays, particularly when the alpine larches turn from green to brilliant shades of gold and amber. For a few short weeks, their luminous colour transforms the high country, glowing against the darker evergreen forests, rugged mountains, and cool autumn skies.
