Original painting was inspired by the mountains surrounding Glennallen in southern Alaska during autumn, one of those remarkable times when the northern landscape is caught between seasons.
Autumn here is incredibly brief. Fresh snow begins to dust the higher mountain slopes while the tundra and forests below come alive with deep reds, glowing oranges, golds, and warm yellows. I have always been fascinated by this contrast—the first signs of winter appearing above while the valleys below are still holding onto the final colours of autumn.
I have returned to this part of Alaska many times over the past couple of decades during my travels and extended painting journeys in the North. Each visit brings different weather, light, and colour, yet the sense of wilderness remains as powerful as ever.
With this painting, I wanted to capture that fleeting transition between autumn and winter and the deep connection I have developed with Alaska’s wild northern landscape through many years of exploration and painting.
