Original painting was inspired by a backpacking and mountaineering journey through the Clayoquot Plateau on Vancouver Island, exploring the remote and rugged beauty of the high alpine.
There is something very special about waking in the mountains and watching the first light of sunrise slowly move across the landscape. In July, the alpine slopes come alive with blooming mountain heather, covering the ground with delicate colour for only a brief period during the short mountain summer.
I was especially drawn to the contrast between the soft, luminous morning light, the colourful heather, and the rugged shapes of the surrounding mountains. It is one of those fleeting moments when everything seems to come together perfectly.
