Original painting was inspired by a painting journey into MacMillan Pass in the remote Mackenzie Mountains of Yukon Territory, looking east toward the Northwest Territories.
I have made several trips along the North Canol Road into this wild and isolated part of the Yukon, and it remains one of my favourite places to explore and paint. The vast valleys, rugged mountains, open tundra, and constantly changing northern light provide an endless source of inspiration.
My days there are usually pretty simple—paint plein air, hike, photograph, explore, and then get up the next morning and do it all over again! Spending that much time directly in the landscape allows me to really absorb the character of the place and bring those experiences back into my larger studio paintings.
