Original painting was inspired by numerous painting journeys through Alaska and by a subject that has fascinated me since childhood—the river valleys and living landscapes they create.
Rivers have always held a special attraction for me. They are not simply carriers of water, but carriers of life, constantly shaping the land, nourishing ecosystems, and recording the passage of time through erosion, movement, and renewal.
In this painting, I focused on the floodplains of the Matanuska River in late autumn, when the landscape still carries the evidence of powerful spring floods. Exposed channels, shifting gravel banks, uprooted trees, and the subtle colours of the changing season reveal the tremendous influence water has on this environment.
What fascinated me was the quietness that follows such immense force. The rushing water has passed, yet its story remains written across the landscape. For me, this painting captures that balance between movement and stillness, resilience and change—a northern river valley caught between seasons, continuously shaped and renewed by water.
